Offshore wind

Offshore wind has emerged as the fastest growing sector of marine renewables. As more wind turbines are installed in deeper waters, the trend is towards floating wind turbines with larger rotors. The technologies for floating wind turbines are currently still in development and there are many technical and economic challenges to overcome. Intensive research activities and the use of advanced technologies accelerate the design process and ensure the safe operation of floating wind turbines. Due to the dynamic behaviour of the floating structure, the design of the wind turbine and the power generation system must be optimised to withstand high accelerations using interdisciplinary numerical simulation methods. Advanced control systems are essential for safe operation of the system.
